In 2025 the Met built a show around Black style and the rest of the world finally learned a word for it. We had been doing it a long time before anybody hung it on a wall.

It was never about the label or what it cost. It was a bow tie and a boutonniere on a man who had every reason to be overlooked and refused to be. My grandfather. That whole row of them in the photograph below. My mother, sending me out the door pressed.

That is the work now. Not costume and not nostalgia. A living practice, put on you, for the room you are walking into.

The scholarship behind the term belongs to Monica L. Miller, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, which the Costume Institute built Superfine: Tailoring Black Style on in 2025. Credit where it is owed. I just never stopped practicing it.

My mother is the best shopper in the world. She dressed me head to toe, and the early pictures on this page were her work before they were ever mine.

While she shopped, I'd be loose in Dillard's putting shirt and tie combinations together for fun. A few days later we'd come back and my fits would be up on the mannequins.

That never left me. Every day is still the first day of school.

I've been a lot of things and I've told that story on camera, in my own words. A gentleman and a scholar... Ask me and I'll tell you the rest.

San Diego

I came here for him.

Roy Rogers Gunner was my uncle. A Navy man out of Port Arthur, Texas, who left active duty on a Friday and started college the following Monday.

He worked nights at General Dynamics for seven years without taking a vacation and came out of it with a law degree. He made Deputy District Attorney, then spent years as a public defender. Both sides of the same courtroom, in this city.

He kept four libraries and watched the news all day with a pen in his hand. I stole books out of those rooms growing up. In 2024 I sent him something I had written, and he told me to come out to San Diego. The most read thing I have ever published was written at his desk.

He never walked out of the house looking like he had not thought about it. I learned that twice. Once from my grandfather, and once from him.
